Plant Chemistry Notes

Pharmacognosy: the study of medicines derived from natural sources. The American Society of Pharmacognosy defines pharmacognosy as "the study of the physical, chemical, biochemical and biological properties of drugs, drug substances or potential drugs or drug substances of natural origin as well as the search for new drugs from natural sources."
This includes the study of plant structure, reproduction, active ingredients and nutrients-vitamins, minerals, sugars, starches and chemical constituents.

Why Herbs?


Herbal medicine has a written history that is more than 5000 years old. With 75% of the worlds population still relying on traditional healing practices, it is hard to imagine a world without herbalists. In 1987 about 85% of drugs were originally derived from plants. Now, only about 15% are derived from plants. Most pharmaceutical drugs are highly refined or completely synthesized.

Herbs serve as the basis for at least 25% of all pharmaceutical drugs. They provide powerful doses of antioxidants, vitamins and anti-inflammatory properties that are known to treat and prevent many diseases. According to the research company Mintel, sales in the homeopathic remedy industry saw an 89% increase last year. Approximately 38% of Americans seek out Complementary and Alternative Medicine. This is an active and growing industry.
